Hourglass Body Type
Attributes
- Bust and hip area appear to be the same voluptuous width with a thin well toned waist
- Weight is concentrated in the shoulder/bust area as well as the hip and thigh area
General Stylist Tips
Your goal is to create the illusion of a more proportional midsection in comparison with the bust and hips. Try the following…
- Design lines and details that draw attention up and outward such as diagonal stripes or asymmetrical cuts in the garment (ex. surplice neckline)
- Loose silhouettes that flow over the midsection...think the tent dresses and tunics that have been so popular
- Straight leg pants and pencil or sheath skirts will create vertical lines instead of adding fullness to an already voluptuous figure
- Empire waistlines will highlight your bust while allowing the fluid bodice to camouflage the waist
Stylist Tips for Fall/Winter
- Dresses
- Empire waist cap sleeve dresses
- Styles that feature added detail at the waistline such as pintucks or bows
- Asymmetrical one shouldered grecian inspired silhouette will diminish the shoulder width thereby lessening the difference between waist and upper torso
- Trapeze styles flow easily over the waist minimizing the difference between waist and hips
- Blouses
- Fitted jackets with a peplum waist will accent your bust and the added fabric at the waistline will minimize the difference between your small waist and wider hips and shoulders
- Empire waist cap sleeve tops will flow easily over the midriff
- Boxy 60's style swing coat/shirt jacket
- Trapeze styles will look great on this shape
- Pants
- The additional waistline fabric of paperbag waist pants work great on your shape
- Pants with pleats are a little more voluminous and lead the eye downward.
- Be thankful, hourglass girls can wear the skinny!! Just be sure to pair them with a flowing top which will minimize the difference between your waist and hip area.
- Skirts
- An A-line skirt with only a slight flare
- A pencil skirt will streamline your curves
